Alan Hutton has urged Tottenham to beat Arsenal to the signing of Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans this summer.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs defender insisted Antonio Conte’s men need the 25-year-old’s creative talents more than the Gunners.
As reported by the Evening Standard on Tuesday (10 May), Tielemans is a top target for Arsenal, with Tottenham, Real Madrid and Barcelona also interested.
The midfielder is heading into the final year of his contract at Leicester, with the Foxes reportedly willing to cash in for a £30million-plus fee.
Hutton admitted Tielemans would be a good fit for both north London sides.
However, he suggested Spurs should push to beat their rivals to a deal.
Asked who needs Tielemans more, Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I think Tottenham need a creative midfielder. I’ve always said that for a long time.
“Defensively, Bentancur and Hojbjerg are the go-to guys at this moment. They’re obviously very good players, but I think they need that person. We spoke about (Christian) Eriksen a few weeks ago, that type of player who can unlock a defence.
“When they are playing defensively, someone that can turn that into an attack very quickly. Tielemans is that type of player. It doesn’t surprise me that Tottenham are looking.
“Arsenal are obviously in a good place at this moment in time, they’re building something good. Possibly Champions League football, so obviously that fits the bill as well.
“They’re two teams where I think he could fit in very well but Tottenham, for me, need that kind of attacking midfielder.”
Tielemans has a total of 24 goals and 23 assists in 154 games for Leicester to date.
