Newcastle dealt another transfer setback after Diego Carlos blow

Eddie Howe's side are getting cut adrift at the bottom of the league

A second transfer update surrounding Newcastle United has emerged on Tuesday evening and it is another blow to the Magpies.

The first blow Newcastle suffered on Tuesday came in their pursuit of Diego Carlos.

The Sevilla man has been linked with the North East outfit for much of the January window, with it reported recently that Newcastle had seen €25m and €35m bids for Carlos rejected.

And on Tuesday, Fabrizio Romano has reported that the Sevilla board have decided to keep Diego Carlos and have no intentions of selling the defender in the final days of the window:

Zapata bid knocked back

Now, it appears Newcastle have been knocked back via Serie A outfit Atalanta in their pursuit of Duvan Zapata.

The Magpies have already been linked with the forward this month. But 90min are now reporting that Atalanta have rejected Newcastle’s opening offer for Duvan Zapata.

It is added that the overall terms of the Zapata deal are not believed to be a major issue. Newcastle are willing to pay an £8m loan, with an obligation to buy for another £30m including bonuses if they stay up.

However, Atalanta are believed to have turned down the offer because they want the obligation to kick in regardless of whether Newcastle remain in the Premier League or not.

Zapata has scored 12 and assisted seven in 22 outings this term and would likely play a key role in keeping Newcastle in the Premier League if he signed.
