Alan Hutton has admitted the lure of Manchester United could prove too great for Rangers to convince Leon King to stay.

The former Gers defender and Rangers TV pundit, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted he fears the 17-year-old centre-back could leave for a “minimal fee” with his contract up at the end of the season.

As revealed by Football Insider last Friday (26 November), Manchester United and Newcastle United are both looking to sign King on a pre-contract deal in January.

It is understood Rangers would receive a compensation fee of around £250,000 if he leaves Ibrox.

Club sources have since told this site (30 November) the Light Blues have made tying King down a “priority”.

However, Hutton admitted he fears the teenager could find it too difficult to resist the temptation of signing for a Premier League giant.

Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “That is not what you want. We said a couple of weeks ago the manager coming in has to focus on winning games now.

“Obviously, it’s difficult to have a look at the young boys coming through.

“They won’t want the same situation happening where the contract runs out and he can go to England for a minimal fee. It’s something that they definitely have to look at and soon because time’s running out.

“The ball’s in his court. If he wanted to, he can run down the contract and go to pastures new. It’s not ideal for Rangers.

“The only thing I fear is when these big teams swoop, the likes of Manchester United. When they’re interested in you, it’s very difficult to turn that down. Hopefully, he can stay at Rangers.”

King has not featured for the first team at all this season after making his debut last term.

However, he was an unused substitute for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s first game against Sparta Prague.

In other news, Kieran Maguire has shared a “surprise” £12m Rangers reveal.
