Frank McAvennie claims it is “wrong” if Connor Goldson remains at Rangers beyond January.
The former Celtic hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insists the gers should cash in on the defender while they still can.
The Athletic‘s Jordan Campbell reported last Thursday (23 December) it is unlikely the 29-year-old will leave the club in January.
He is out of contract in the summer of 2022, meaning he is free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs from January.
Glasgow-based McAvennie has told Rangers to sell Goldson in January so Giovanni van Bronckhorst can strengthen his squad using the money.
“I must say, I think think that’s wrong,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“You can’t have players at the club who don’t want to be there.
“Goldson isn’t signing a new deal, it’s not confirmed but we all know it’s happening.
“So he will be leaving one way or the other. Get rid of him if he doesn’t want to be there.
“Get rid of him in January so you can get a bit of money for him, then you can invest.
“That gives Van Bronckhorst the chance to bring his own players in which I’m sure is what he wants.
“I just don’t see the reasoning in keeping Goldson. You can’t say he will be committed if he has another move lined up.
“Baffling, I just don’t get it.”
Goldson has made 31 appearances for Rangers so far this season.
His side are next in action against Aberdeen on 18 January.
